Get to know the programs that your kids will be experiencing on "Hingham CARES Day" at Hingham High School. On May 18th, each class will attend an assembly with prevention programming that is designed specifically for them.

"Consequences of Youth Substance Use"

This is an interactive panel discussion with representatives from the various entities that create, implement and enforce laws, rules and regulations around youth substance use. Our panelists include DA Tim Cruz, Principal Rick Swanson, Officer Rob Ramsey, Officer Tom Ford, Athletic Director Jim Quatromoni, MIAA Director Rich Pearson and School Committee Policy Subcommittee Chair Jen Benham. Come prepared with your questions, or submit them here.

Parents and guardians are invited to participate in an interactive workshop series that helps inform ways to discuss substance use with their middle-schoolers. Attendance at all four meetings is required. Three of the workshops are for parents/guardians only. The fourth (10/7) takes place in the evening and includes the children in the conversation. Linda Nathan, LICSW, is a former adjustment counselor with the Scituate Public Schools and leads the workshops. Click here to register.

Wellness Wednesdays
with Linda Nathan, LICSW
Linda is a former adjustment counselor with the Scituate Public Schools and is also the facilitator of Guiding Good Choices. She will provide tips for talking with teens about drugs and alcohol every Wednesday from now through the end of the year.

"These posts will include key concepts from the Guiding Good Choices Curriculum developed by Dr. David Hawkins and Dr. Richard Catalano of the University of Washington," said Linda. "Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Catalano began their research because they were curious about why some teens are protected from addiction and other health issues and others are not. Through their research they found that parents can make a big difference in whether or not children begin misusing drugs and alcohol."
In addition, Linda will share ideas and strategies from her own experience
as a family therapist and a school adjustment counselor.

The community is invited to a showing of the powerful film, "If They Had Known," which will be shown to the freshman class during an assembly on May 20th. Parents of freshmen are particularly encouraged to attend.

"I Have A Future" Open House
10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Hingham Community Center
Students in SADD at Hingham High School made posters and wrote poems, and students in the DARE program at Hingham Middle School wrote essays highlighting the importance of how making safe and healthy choices now impacts their futures.
